Bishop Zurek, together with the other bishops of Texas and the United States, have designated this Monday (February 26) as "Catholic Call-In Day for Dreamers." The bishops are encouraging all Catholics to call the senators and representatives through the Capitol switchboard (1-855-589-5698) to deliver one of the following simple messages: "Protect Dreamers from deportation and provide them with a path to citizenship," "Reject proposals that undermine family immigration or protections for unaccompanied children," "Act now to protect Dreamers, our immigrant brothers and sisters." More information is available at www.justiceforimmigrants.org (a website hosted by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).
Next Sunday we will be welcoming hundreds of visitors to our parish for our annual Czech Sausage Dinner. If you haven't already signed up for a volunteer job, please do so after Mass this weekend. Also, please consider donating some baked goods for the Country Store. As a reminder, if you are working at the dinner or attending the 11:15 Mass next Sunday, please park in the back parking lot closest to the open field.
Due to the long holiday weekend, we will not have faith formation classes (pre-school through adult) on Sunday, February 18. Classes will resume next Sunday (February 25).
As of this writing, the first two videos in Bishop Barron's "The Teachings of Jesus" series were scheduled to be sent this past week and the last two videos in the series are scheduled to be sent this Tuesday and Friday. Assuming the videos are uploading correctly this time around, we will begin to send the videos in his "Who is Jesus" series next Sunday (March 11). Each of these videos is just a few minutes long, and you can view them and reflect on them whenever you have a free moment to do so. If you are not already connected to our parish through Flocknote, sign up today by texting "Canyon" to 84576 or by following the simple registration process at app.flocknote.com/stanncanyon.
Our parish now has an official Facebook page! (Any and all other pages for our parish that are on Facebook are unofficial and unapproved. If you know of one, please contact the parish office.) We will gather for Mass at 6 p.m. this Wednesday evening in the church, After Mass, we will enjoy delicious pulled pork sandwiches provided by members of St. Jude Circle. After supper, we'll break into groups to explore the Lenten discipline of almsgiving and how we can use the Lenten rice bowl to become more aware of and help to alleviate poverty in our world.
Please consider participating in the annual Rice Bowl project during Lent this year. This is a great family activity! The rice bowl can be used as a focal point of prayer in your home, a means of practicing the Lenten discipline of almsgiving, and a way of entering into solidarity with the poor and the hungry in our world. There are lots of resources and activities for use with your rice bowl at crsricebowl.org. Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic community. Rice bowls are available in the narthex after Mass.
Please take home and use some of the devotional resources for Lent that are available in the narthex. There are daily reflection booklets for adults in English and Spanish ("Daybreaks"), an activity booklet for children ("Our Lenten Journey"), and a family devotion and activity book (Practicing Love").
In observance for Sunday's World Day of Prayer for the Sick, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated immediately after the 5 p.m. Mass today (February 10). If you have a serious illness, you are invited to participate in the celebration of this sacrament.
Fr. Busch will not be available for the Sacrament of Penance this afternoon (Saturday, February 3). He will be at a school event until shortly before the 5 p.m. Mass. Thank you for your understanding.
The Knights of Columbus will be holding a 5K/10K Run/Walk on Saturday, February 17 at 9 a.m. beginning in front of our church. The entry fee is $25 if received before 6 p.m. on February 16 or $30 on the day of the race. Entry forms can be picked up in the parish office.
The season of Lent begins this Wednesday! We will have celebrations of the Eucharist, with the signing of ashes taking place after the homily, at 7 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 6 p.m. Please remember that Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence (even though it falls on Valentine's Day this year!).
